This is definitely the best BBQ restaurant in the Newport News/Hampton area. The only two downfalls are 1) No steak and 2) The prices are a high -Their corn muffins are fantastic! All of their meat is cooked to perfection. -If you want something lower priced the stuffed potato skins with bacon, pulled pork, etc are very good for $8 -The service is very friendly and very fast. -Very clean restaurant including the bathroom (which is wheelchair accessible) -NOTE: Bring a small jacket, it gets a bit chilly in there. -You also have the option of eating outside. Big win for meat lovers!

I went to this location with some friends. We wanted to go somewhere different and chose Smoke BBQ. When we arrived, we were greeted by the intoxicating smell of smoking food on the outdoor grills. The smells alone excited us for a great smoke bbq experience. When we got in, the place was so clean. The decor was more of a modern rustic look, but still warm and inviting. The staff greeted us as soon as we got in the door. The hostess station also had a bunch of menus that were available for customers to take. We thought it was a nice touch since we had never been here. We ordered three different things and the food was great! The food came out hot and we didn't have to wait too long. The staff worked together to make sure we had full drinks and any condiments we could imagine. We will be back soon!

Imagine if you will a hunger. A hunger for BBQ. Surrounded by tempting scents and delicious food all around you but not in front of you. That was my Smoke Experience. We were seated at the same time as another couple, orders were taken for both of us and sent to the kitchen. They were then served, ate, paid their bill and left before we ever saw our email. We flagged down a runner who tried to track down our server with no luck. An hour after ordering, we checked food status to find out it would still be another 15 minutes. But those delicious aromas, maybe it's worth the wait! We decided to stay rather than canceling our order and leaving. Once our orders came out more disappointment ensued. I had the most flavorless dry brisket I've ever experienced. The highlight of my plate was the Herb Mashed Potatoes and Gravy (which were truly amazing) but so disappointing at a BBQ joint. Maybe they had a bad day and the service was off but I can't imagine giving another shot for less than average food.

I've come here twice now. The first time I got the appetizer and although it didn't look pretty it tasted delightful. The second time I came with my father and his friend. They got the smoke master sandwich with pork bbq and brisket. Both of them were satisfied. The collards are decent, and the mac and cheese is better than most restaurants. The fries are great and well seasoned. My only qualm I have is on both occasions my food wasn't very hot, but not cold, just less than ideal eating temp. Overall great place to eat.

My son and I ate here on Monday afternoon. He had the triple meat burger and I had the pulled pork sandwich, plus and order of fried pickles, two beers and a tea. Total was $51. Service was good and the meat was very tender, I'd definitely stop back by when in Newport.

Food truck review. Friendly staff, quick service, and delicious food. Brisket sandwich was flavorful and tender, the fries well-seasoned. Very reasonable prices. Thanks for being a part of Harborfest!

We were unaware of this place and almost stopped at a generic chain before we got here. Curvy Hostess and Waitress Michelle: 5 Stars Outstandly easy on the eyes. Strapping healthy lasses. Potato salad: 4 Stars They take potato salad very seriously down South. They would never serve the bland nasty poop like at home. Caviar ( Bean salad ) 4 Stars Really tasty Turkey Club: 4 Stars Grandma got this. Draft beers: 4 Stars Red Sky at at Night and Peacemakers, a little hoppy both for my taste but good beer. Brisket Sandwich: 5 Stars I think the best I have ever had. It wasn't pulled, it was sliced. I am not from the South, so I do not understand Brisket the way they do. For me, fat is important for the cooking, BUT I do not want to spit out any into my napkin. I spit nothing out here. Every bite was delicious. Value: 5 Stars Two big tasty sides and a great sandwich, ten bucks ! Observation: "Eat where the locals do" This maxim does not work for us at home for let's say Chinese food, as they may want a different experience than we seek. In this case we for sure saw a bunch of Bubbas who looked like they knew what real BBQ is, a party of ten, and this is where they went. Overall score: 5 Stars I normally do not give 5 stars on a single visit, but I may never get back here, so I ca not see this BBQ experience being surpassed.

Went there for a late lunch yesterday and had the pork sandwich with coleslaw, potato salad and iced tea. Also got the sliders. You get 3 of them, one pork, one brisket, and one chicken. Aaaand no, i didn't finish all of it ;-). Wanted some left overs for later. The portions are generous and all of the sandwiches were loaded with meat. No skimping here and I'm glad to see that :-) Further, the sandwiches were excellent, the slaw and potato salad were very good as well. Prices are reasonable too. Definitely worth a second visit !!

Huge potential! This restaurant is run by non-restaurant people who are still finding their way. Overall, the food is outstanding. I love the smoked wings (dry rub) with sauce on the side. Salads are good as well. My son loves their ribs, which is a statement since he is brown/yellow food eater! The downside is the service. The first 15 to-go orders I placed were wrong and no one seemed to care. It's such a disappointment that this great food is not complimented with better service, yet I don't think the owners know how to drive excellence in this area, so it will perpetuate as a problem. I would return, but not for a sit-down dinner as the service is terrible.

Undergoing renovations. New flooring, seating, new outdoor patio being constructed. But still open serving amazing BBQ. Even better than my last visit. Portions are gargantuan. Reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

Last night my friend and I had the 16 dollar 3 Meat special! It was amazing we got extra sides etc! While we could have ordered a second plate I personally feel it would have been way too much food! Even after too big eater girls who were starving we still had Leftovers! Smoke you won me over! But You really should have some bite size samples of your smoked sausage so some of us can decide if it is something we would eat a whole lot of!

This place makes no sense people. You get wayyyyyy more than what you pay for and I have been several times and have tried darn there everything on their menus and I haven't found a single item that wasn't good. The staff is friendly. Hands Down.

First time here after hearing about the delicious BBQ! It was great! The Pulled Pork entree had more than enough meat for leftovers. The meal came with two sides and a cornbread muffin. The BBQ beans had meat in them and were delicious!! The Mac & Cheese was okay. I did take some string beans. They were great! And the cornbread muffin topped it off well. The sweet tea was great to drink. Not too sweet and no bad after taste. Will definitely visit again.

Smoke BBQ...where do I begin? When we asked for a table, we were given a blank stare and the young lady's response was, "I'm not a hostess". Okay, great. Strike #1. First impression was that this place operates on the "that's not my job mentality"; fatal to customer service. Another employee arrived to assist and promptly left to see what the availability of an outside table was. He never returned, but his female counterpart did stating, "we have a picnic table but it's all wet". Okay... How about offering a productive solution such as: "we have an outside table but if you would, please bear with me for just one moment while I get it ready for you". When she finally guided us to an indoor table, there was a server using the high top to count her change and the table was covered in water. I'd say we weren't off to a great start. After seeing the Smoke food truck at different events & reading reviews, we were excited to try the BBQ. I ordered brisket, mac&cheese, and green beans. My significant other ordered the pull pork with fries, and my friend ordered the Burning Belly Burger with mashed potatoes & mac&cheese. My friend's first taste of the mashed potatoes led her to say, "tastes like KFC"; with my first bite, I had to agree. The overpriced brisket was dry, the pork was "so so" and the three of us were left wondering where these raving reviews came from. We are from the true South (GA) and that was not good BBQ. 2 stars because the food was warm, but that was about it. If I'm going to spend that much on BBQ, it's going to be at Fox Bros. BBQ in ATL. Not at Smoke. Major disappointment.

Another great meal at smoke. My family really loves it hear, so glad I live 100 miles away or this would be a problem. Tonight my husband had the hot dog. They need to rename this with a much less deceiving name, something that conveys its massive meaty nature. The hot dog is more of a food challenge than a meal. We loved the renovations since our last visit and can't wait till we get to stop in again.

Ribs were amazing, brisket was fork tender. Appetizers of deviled eggs, onion rings and Bbq filled potato skins were awesome. Prices were very reasonable for quality and quantity. We only did carry out but the place was hopping. My only complaint is that they are very popular and you need to go early or call your order in early or be prepared to wait an hour for your food. But they are organized and do their best. Will return again!

Sat at the bar had the ribs. Bar tender was nice and attentive. Good beer selection, mostly Virginia beers which I like. The ribs weren't amazing though... But dried out and nowhere near as good as their pulled pork.

The wife and I had dinner last night on the awesome new patio. Food quality was great. Service was great. Atmosphere was great. I had the triple platter w/ pork ribs, beef ribs and pulled pork. All were melt in your mouth delicious! The ambiance was enhanced by the aroma of the pig smoker's proximity from the patio. Perfect night for a great dining experience.

This place is fantastic down-home cooking. We've been twice in the last month. Once we ate in with our toddler. The staff was SO kind and accommodating (even as he started getting bored and throwing things on the floor). The waitress messed up my order by accident and quickly and kindly resolved the problem. Partner had a platter with ribs. I sampled some and they were excellent. Wasn't a big fan of my sandwich, but the corn muffins and mashed potatoes were outstanding. Last week we ordered take out for a large party. Pulled pork, brisket, green beans and Mac and cheese. All superb (and I don't even like brisket!) - the green beans were a real winner! Perfectly cooked with bacon. We got the sweet sauce which I really liked and others in my party had the spicier one and enjoyed it. Overall good quality BBQ. We will be back for sure!

  • Ashley W.

Amazing BBQ. I got the platter with ribs and pulled chicken. You also get two sides. Their BBQ beans and mashed potatoes. Meat was tender and flavorful. They even have 4 different BBQ sauces to choose from on your table if you want extra. Our waiter was Kenny. Awesome dude. Very attentive and not obtrusive at all. Showed up at the perfect moments and didn't longer. This will now be my go to place for BBQ.

  • Johnna C.

Food was good. Service stumbled. Appetizers took way too long to arrive. They hit the table 2mins before our dinner. Meats on sampler platter were perfectly smoked. Collards were excellent. Could have been a 5 star but the waitstaff as a whole seemed more interested in getting off work, as opposed to actually being present.

THE BEST BBQ IN HAMPTON ROADS HANDS DOWN!!!! Everything on our plates was so good . Nothing to complain about . Had the brisket , sausage, and the Kansas City style baby back ribs. Puts County Line BBQ to shame.

  • Jim B.

Eh, it was OK. The ribs were pretty good, but not the best I've had in town. The brisket should have been more tender. The sauce on the table came in two flavors: "sweet" or "red" (whatever that means). They tasted pretty similar. For sides I had the beans and the mac. Neither was remarkable. They did have a really good beer selection, which was almost redeeming. The service was pretty good. However, it was packed so we got seated in the back room under the air intake for the HVAC. It was like sitting in a wind tunnel. Also, parking was scarce; I had to park on the end of a row. There are better BBQ places around.

Visited after the Blues, Brews, and BBQ fest in Yorktown because they ran out of BBQ. You heard me. How does a BBQ fest run out of BBQ? Regardless... This was our first visit to Smoke and it was really great. The sides and meat were all excellent. My little one was fussing and acting crazy, so I didn't get to take my time enjoying the meal, but our waitress was so nice and patient with us! I ended up boxing half of my meal, but it made for a great dinner.

We tried Smoke for the first time during Newport News restaurant week and were prepared to be disappointed having spent so much time eating Texas barbecue. Instead we were absolutely delighted by the flavors, meat quality, service, beer selection, and portion size. I wavered on giving it 5 stars because the regular menu was missing some of my favorites (stuffed baked potato please!) and the seating arrangement is very tight. Smoke's barbecue potato skin appetizer looks delicious though and they're building an additional outdoor, semi enclosed (and hopefully warm!) seating area so perhaps I should reconsider. Also it's a very relaxed setting which I'm thankful for because with patrons packed that closely together children can easily become more bothersome. On to the food! My husband had the pork belly which had great flavor but doesn't really excite me. The brisket nachos were fantastic and the meat was plentiful but unfortunately so was the lettuce. Next time we will definitely order the potato skins! The meat trio entree (brisket, pork, chicken) was phenomenal- each had a distinct smoky flavor and the portion size was generous. We paired it with the baked beans which were a bit firm but again the sauce was excellent. Draft Heavy Seas Imperial Porter accompanied our meal well and our server was very knowledgeable about their interesting rotating beer selection. My husband and I didn't think we could eat anymore food when the cobbler arrived but somehow we managed every last wondrous bite. Prices were a little high but that's "normal" in Hampton Roads! Did I forget to mention their slighty sweet heavenly cornbread? It's served before the meal and helps one move past the sticker shock before your meal arrives.

Certainly the best BBQ around here. The service is hit or miss but I've never had a bad meal. The mashed potatoes are legit. I don't care for the sausage, but the chicken and the brisket were good.

I came here for a retirement ceremony for someone at my husbands work. They have a very accommodating party room in the back. The service was great. They definitely know how to handle a large party. I really loved the fresh pork rinds. I highly suggest them.

After passing this restaurant so many times and smelling the BBQ from the street, we finally went in this afternoon for lunch. So glad we did. We went at 11:00 right when they opened, and it was already packed. I had the smoked rueben, sweet Smokey wings, and Mac and cheese. Delicious. One person had the highly recommended bacon wrapped hot dog piled with brisket and Cole slaw. They LOVED it. Our other guest had the smoked sausage, brisket and baby back rib platter. He had to stop himself from eating it all at once. It was fantastic!

After running 5 miles at the Noland Trail we were too hungry to drive the whole way home to eat the brisket on the smoker at the house. We stopped in here and had a smokehouse burger a rack of baby back ribs and a pulled pork platter oh my God everything was delicious. At first I was not ready to run the stupid trail again with my wife but after dinner bring it on baby!

Brisket nachos. 3 entree sampler - twice smoked brisket, baby back ribs, pulled chicken, potato salad and mac and cheese. The nachos were probably my favorite thing, but nothing was bad. Nothing. We found this place after passing it on our way to mini-golf next door and my boyfriend pointing out that it was the only place that looked packed in the parking lot. Needing a bite to eat before heading back to Richmond we stopped in. Three of us shared the nachos and me and my boyfriend shared the sampler, which had leftovers once we were done. I think I've seen him take home leftovers twice in my life. This was a hefty amount of food! The potato salad was more vinegar based (maybe?) sauce with no additions. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy (think Velvetta, not baked). And the ribs, oh the ribs. As someone who doesn't usually eat ribs, I was very happy that we tried them. Also, I tried my mom's green beans, and I will be ordering them on my next trip - better than the potato salad in my opinion. As my boyfriend who is not big on BBQ has been talking about this place every day since we left, I know we will return. I can't wait to try the pork belly appetizer. It sounds amazing!

Best BBQ we've had! The southwest barbecue salad and smoke master sandwich were fabulous! Their potato salad is spicy with a non traditional taste which we were undecided about. Their smokin' sweet and smokin' red sauces were both excellent. The service was fast, friendly, and attentive. The only thing that could be improved is the comfort of the chairs, which are stylish but firm.

Smoke is definitely a restaurant worth going to in Newport News. I have visited smoke several times and have never been let down. I am a huge brisket fan, and would recommend their brisket sandwich to any fellow brisket lovers. The service is good and the food comes out quickly which is a big plus in my opinion. A few menu highlights I'll share besides the brisket sandwich are the nachos- totally out of this world. Piled high with Smokey brisket, I believe if not it was pulled pork, but it had a hearty portion of meat accompanied with all the traditional toppings yoy would have with nachos. Another favorite is the pulled chicken sandwich- great flavor! As far as sides go- their macaroni and cheese is very creamy - not the baked kind. If I would have known I would have ordered two mac n cheese as my sides for my sandwich. Definitely worth a try for all my fellow bbq lovers!

Visiting from out of town, my dad had heard that Smoke BBQ Restaurat Bar was all of the new rage. Best new everything, and that we just had to try it. I'm always happy to try something new. I'll start off in saying that my overall experience was a fun one, but that I was not impressed with the experience as a whole. We started off with onion rings as an appetizer, which were the standard onion rings. Nothing bad, nothing great. As an entree I got the brisket, with the Mac N Cheese and beans as a side. My dad got the platter with pulled pork BBQ, the spare ribs, potato salad, and slaw. The brisket arrived room temperature (as if it had been pre-cooked, sat, then put on the plate) the corn muffin was about the same temperature, but the sides were warm. The Mac N Cheese came in a gooey, cheesey flavor, pretty good, but no baked topping (as with traditional southern mac). The beans had a good bbq flavor to them and it seemed like some of the brisket (or other meat) had been cooked into them. My biggest complain about the brisket wasn't the taste (it had a decent taste,) the meat wasn't dry, just room temperature, and I suspect not very fresh. My dad got the platter. Ribs, pulled pork, potato salad, and slaw. He loved the ribs. Couldn't stop talking about how great they were, I had a small tasted, and admit that they were done pretty well. Tasted as if they were cooked over an open flame, and sauce added towards the end, rather than sauce first, then the burn / carmelization. The pulled pork was very vinagery... and they offer sauces at the table, so you can always customize, but it was more of a carolina style pork. The potato salad was a very basic, not much flavor to it, a very potato(y) , salt and pepper flavor. Big pet peeve. You're a bbq joint, but you don't have PBR. How serious can I take you?

As a Texas-native, I'm picky about brisket. This place has the best I've had since leaving the Lone Star State. Their sides are also top-notch. I'm looking forward to warmer weather and enjoying their new patio -- there are so few places in HR with nice outdoor dining options. Smoke does a great job with catering, too!

Love the Smokemaster sandwich!!! Loaded with pulled pork and sliced brisket then topped with coleslaw. And you just can't get better sides than their yummy collards and pork rinds. I try to sit with Kirk at the bar most of the time when I'm in the mood for a craft beer. Finally, it's nice that the owner comes by to say hello and thank you! I can wait for the outdoor temps to cool a bit so I can sit on their patio again

My boyfriend told me about this place! He works in Newport News but we live in va beach. Since we were in the area, he decided to take me here. I'm glad he did! We both ordered the platter (2 choices of meat for 16.99). We both got the beef ribs and beef brisket. It was delicious! Still doesn't beat my number one BBQ place, but it was good! We both got to pick 2 sides. I got cole slaw French fries and he got collard greens and herb mashed potatoes. We both absolutely loves the mashed potatoes.. I highly recommend it! The only not-so-good thing I will say about this place is that the service is a little slow. We were probably seated for about 5 mins before our server came to our table, but she was really nice. The food also took a little while to come out. We probably won't come back as much since it's pretty far from our place, but it's definitely worth trying if you're in the area! :)

You know the song in The Lego Movie "Everything is Awesome"? Well, that's the theme song to this place! While the food took awhile to be served, we were fine with it as we knew good food takes time. The baby back ribs were tender and had a delicious smokey flavor. The veggies were just as good (in a buttery liquid but not overdone: Zucchini, squash, carrots) and the green beans were amazing! They must have been in the smoker for a bit with the meat; probably the best I have had. The fries are definitely cooked in peanut oil and were tasty, though no one finished theirs as you just don't have the room! The roast chicken was very tasty and my 12 year old daughter said her pork sandwich was the best she had ever had! My husband loved the special (a BBQ chicken wrap) and my other son said his burger was amazing as well. The food, drink, service and price is excellent. Our family of 5, with one beer, three sodas came to only the upper $60s! I overheard a gentleman from TX and his companion from CO come in and say that this place came highly recommended. I have to agree. If you like meat, go here. If you like BBQ, go here. If you want a meal that will leave you so full and happy, go here. We will definitely be back!

Great BBQ, terrific portions. The Hot Dog is amazing! They close at 10pm thought so its not really a night time spot even though they have a bar. Id like to see them stay open until at least 11 and host some drink specials.

This is our local BBQ spot. Hailing from Kansas City and Texas, the wife and I are well-qualified BBQ reviewers. The ribs and chicken and coke slaw here are as good as anything you can get in KC or TX. I appreciate having sauce options. The sweet is just like KC style. The only thing here that I don't recommend are the mashed potatoes.

Road trip stop here. Had the Smoke Master Sandwich Platter - basically an unnecessarily large serving of brisket AND pork atop a potato roll, with 2 sides - of which I chose baked beans and house made potato chips. This was a lot of food folks, especially for the $10 price tag. What happened to me here was a very rare occasion where I actually could not finish my food. Sometimes I purposefully do not finish all my food in an attempt to exercise some restraint and will power. This time I wanted to eat this sandwich monster, it was so good, I just could not stuff any more meat into my fat mouth. As a barbecue enthusiast and former barbecue restaurant owner, I call this as solid barbecue. The meat stood on its own merits, it was tender, moist, and smokey and did not need but was delicious with any of their sauces. My beans were good, my potato chips were great, and I could eat those corn bread muffins all day. They lost one star because we literally waited an hour for our food to come out. The problem was that they had a private party going on in the back, and the place started to fill up about half an hour after we got there with the after church crowd. Our waitress was distressed about it, but still, this was just too long for 2 sandwich platters and a rib platter. It is worth noting that the service was friendly and it looked like the waitresses were working their asses off. I would definitely make another pit stop here next time I am driving through the area.

Went with my family last night. All the meat was amazing! Loved my ribs, mom got pulled pork and dad got wings. The sauces were amazing and the portion sizes were right. My only complaint... the sides! We got greens, coleslaw, mac and cheese. Greens: No flavor! Not a spice in sight, just cold, boiled mustard greens.... dissappointing. When we asked about them they said it depends who is there to make them, and they are sometimes" in a hurry"... sooo... Coleslaw: dominant flavors of water/cabbage/sugar. Over chopped. consistency of baby food, blandness to match. Mac & cheese: Meh. Im pretty sure this was frozen. It also comes out in a perfectly round ball, so theres that... Also, my mothers meal came out ice cold...they quickly brought her a new one, which was nice. But the server admited that they just had a big buckets in the back for the pulled pork and her sides... yum? The meat is soo good.... just get the sides together and hire some people not "in a hurry" and this place could be really great!

I've been here a few times, the first time it was right after they changed owners and I guess they had something to prove so it was very good. The second time we had a waitress that should have been in a geriatric facility, besides that she was friendly but slow and forgetful, the tuna I ordered was supposed to be rare, it came out well done, whatever I'll eat. The third time I decided to dine here, we waited forever to be seated then waited forever to order and so on and so on. The fourth time I went was with a bunch of friends, food was great, service was nothing to be desired.

This was my second visit to Smoke. The first visit I would have rated 5 stars, but this time wasn't as enjoyable. My sandwich and sides were cold. My brother's burger was not only incredibly undercooked, but not the burger he ordered! He specifically asked for a Smoke Burger, which has cheese, bacon, and BBQ on it, but he received a regular hamburger with some lettuce and onions. His fries were cold as well. My parents loved their brisket and ribs. My mother's mac and cheese and beans were cold too. The appetizers were great though. Also, our service was so-so. The waitress was sort of flighty, and when she brought us our check she walked off even though our card was ready. It took another 10-15 minutes for her to pick it up. I just really wasn't impressed. They'd also removed something from the menu I'd had before that was delicious (shrimp skewers). I was really looking forward to them :/ Considering how far from us it is, I don't think we'll go back. In my opinion, stick to County Grille!

So. Much. Amazing. Food! This place is worth the drive from Chesapeake! My husband and I went here and we made it a point to order something different than one another. I got the 2 for 18 with brisket, pulled pork, BBQ beans and coleslaw. My husband got the 3 for 20 with the twice smoked brisket (burnt ends), ribs, pulled pork, mashed potatoes, and Mac n cheese. I thought my husbands eyes were going to bug out of his head when the plates got there! His plate was PILED HIGH with food and mine was close behind on the quantity. All of the meat was seasoned amazingly, all of the BBQ sauces on the side were awesome, even the sides were insanely good. The mashed potatoes were by far the best side that we had the rest were still pretty good too. And I can't say enough good things about the pulled pork. It was even amazing reheated at home! It might be a 45 minute trip to get there, but it is worth every single second.

Staying in Williamsburg on vacation and drove to Newport news and was not disappointed. Service was good, I had sausage ribs and chicken and it was all very good at a decent price. Can't go wrong if your in the mood for bbq.

Fantastic BBQ! Which is what you come for. The sides were hit or miss, but the meats and BBQ sauces were incredible! Best I've had in the area!

On Friday, January 11th, 2013, me and 18 of my friends headed to this spot. We heard so many good reviews. We had to try it out! I had made a reservation with them for about a week because of my large party. We got there and had to wait almost an 1hr before we sat down because they were not ready for my party. This was very disappointing as what's the point of the reservation. My friends were a bit ticked off about this; so the pressure was on ME to make it as pleasant as possible. The manager never gave us anything or accommodated us with any compensation for the lost of time and inconvenience. :( Once we sat down, we started to mingle and chit-chat. We noticed that we were assigned only ONE waitress for a table of 18. :( Very poor service here. By the time the waitress came about handing out foods out (there was a huge 30 minute between the first plate and the last) the foods were mostly cold. They were tasteful but for most of my friends they were displeased with the cold fries and mac/cheese etc. :( I think for a party of this big, they should have had 2 waitresses or something to better take our orders and bring out items out in a timely fashion. Their excuse was that they were short staffed. So, I dont know whether to give them credit for that or not, so I will give them benefit of a doubt and assume they were short staffed. Half way through our meals, we were all shocked to see a DOG walk into the restaurant. First it scared us because we didnt know what it was. Eventually, the owner of the dogs came to us and apologize stating that this was a service dog in training. Needless to say, they took the dog to the back in the kitchen area. Most of us were uncomfortable with this scene. :( Questioning their sanitary standards. We tried to understand that it was a service dog in training but to hide it in the kitchen where foods are being prepared and served? Eek *shivers* dont even want to go there. :) Overrall, the service was alright; the food was good. I will be returning back but with a smaller group, so that I can get a warmer plate of food. :) Pros: Comfy, good selection of food, prices were reasonable Cons: Bar is too darn small, can only fit like 8 people :(. Not a great place for large groups, a bit of a small restaurant.

It's hit or miss with Smoke in my opinion. You either get great service and wonderful, or you get terrible service and wrong food. My server last night definitely hit that mark. We had to get a manager to take our drink order. After our waitress took our food order we never saw her again. Once our food arrived we had to get another waitress to give us drink refills. My waitress also took my order wrong, so I got the wrong sides. Needless to say I was too hungry to bother with the manager again. After waiting for 20 mins for our checking, I waved the manager down to complain out the terrible service. He was nice enough to give us a discount on our meal and send us home with some banana pudding (which was fantastic). My advice; if you get a good waitress or waiter request for them every time you go.

Great food! I appreciate the back room for parties too. The staff is great. Every time we have been there, we have had no complaints. The servers are just outstanding like the food! I really enjoy the smoke belly and wings. The portions here are huge. The Cobb salad is wonderful as well as the nachos. I like how big this place is. They can accommodate everyone. We've been here with larger parties and for a table of 9 and no one... I mean no one had any issues with their food. I will say this, my kids miss their kettle popcorn! Ha!

Closest we have found to South Carolina BBQ. They still put vinegar in the BBQ which I find unnecessary if you know how to smoke meat, but every where else here drowns their meat in sauce and you can't get it dry. This place is tasty and friendly. We will return.

Honey bourbon wings were perfect as was the brisket. My friend got the baby back ribs with greens and the max and cheese; he raved about it! This ace is not to be missed. Outstanding and friendly service too!

My fiancé and I went here for the first time last night and were really impressed. We started out with the barbecue deviled eggs and they were delicious! It was a fairly big appetizer for only $5. He got the pulled pork barbecue sandwich with fries and mac n cheese and was so happy. We just moved 2 weeks ago from Austin, TX so we were skeptical that any barbecue place could be anywhere near as amazing as the BBQ that we're used to. Smoke definitely exceeded our expectations. I got pork chops with mango salsa and green beans and it was indredibly good. I definitely recommend the mashed potatoes, they are wonderful.

Finally decided to check out this restaurant today. Wish I had not come. Cold fries, cold muffin, overcooked and dry baby back ribs. The collards were good, brisket and pulled pork were OK. Will not be back.

I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. The service is good and the BBQ is the best I've ever had. Ribs, Pulled Pork, Wings, Rachel Sandwich....all memorably delicious! Last visit I had the Mac n Cheese side - yum! Too much food! Plan on enjoying your leftovers!

Killer BBQ. Killer BBQ. I mean KILLER BBQ. This is top 2, of best BBQ I have had. I had the 3 meat sampler, Pulled pork, brisket, and thier "rope sausage"..... I will add to this review later, but this place deserves 6 stars.... WOW. (read my other reviews, I am a bbq snob).....

I gave Smoke BBQ Restaurant and Bar one star because that was minimum choice. If I could give it zero stars. Driving up Warwick Ave, you can smell BBQ in the air and it smells so good!! I couldn't wait to get inside and have some of it!! Even though my fiance had an undercooked burger there about 2 months ago, we decided to take a chance. Maybe the cook was having a bad day. Upon entry and stopping at the hostess stand, the bartender hollered over from the conversation she was having with a patron at the bar that someone would be with us in a moment, and continued with her conversation. No biggie really. After all, she DID acknowledge us. A waitress come out with a platter of food to serve her table and told us that someone would be with us in a moment. Then an unfriendly looking female came up to the hostess stand, made zero eye contact with us, grabbed something and walked away. Perplexed, we wondered if she was the someone that was going to be with us in a moment. Another young lady came up to the hostess stand, smiled at us and told us to follow the other female who was apparently seating us. We went around to the table and the female had set the menus and silverware on the table and was walking away. She had never bothered with greeting us, looking at us or letting us know she was even seating us. Maybe she was having a bad day. We chose to leave the establishment instead of giving Smoke BBQ our hard-earned money. 5 stars for the enticing smells outside, zero stars for customer service.

Finally, a decent BBQ restaurant in Hampton-roads! My wife had heard all the rumors about Smoke and decided to give them a try for lunch. I ordered the Brisket Sandwich for $8.99 and wife ordered the Brisket platter for $13.49. My large sandwich came with three cuts of brisket that greatly overlapped both side of the sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. It also comes with two sides. I got baked beans and homemade potato chips. I was impressed by the size and tenderness of the brisket included with the sandwich. I loved it all. My wife's brisket came with equally copious helping of brisket. it was more than she could eat, so I gladly helped. The brisket was just as tender and delicious as what was provided for my sandwich. Her two sides included chips and coleslaw. My wife loved her meal too. The best part was all the sides were freshly made and not canned or outsourced to another vendor (or so we were told). I have no doubt of the veracity of their claim, considering the quality of sides which were presented to us. There was a spicy BBQ, Sweet BBQ and mustard BBQ sauces to choose from. They were all good, but we liked the later two the most. Smoke provides kettle corn as a free appetizer to it's customers. It is a high quality kettle corn that appears to be made off-site, but by a local vendor. You can purchase a bag to take home for $6. Be aware you'll have to request your kettle corn, since it is by-request only. Smoke lives up to its hype, which is rare for a restaurant. As long as they don't start cutting corners, it should be around a long time.

My husband and I tried Smoke after hearing a lot about it, and seeing the parking lot consistently packed! The interior is much nicer than the exterior, so don't let that scare you. I'm a fan of kettle corn, so it was refreshing to get that instead of the basic bread and butter when we sat. I loved the ribs, they were wonderful. My husband got the pork belly and that was also very yummy. This is a BBQ joint, and to comment of the other reviewer - fat is flavor. This is a great place to relax and enjoy some fun times eating BBQ.

My new favorite BBQ restaurant. The brisket is amazing! Juicy, smokey, but falls apart it is so tender. Pulled pork is fantastic. The wings are smoked before they are fried to crisp up the skin. An assortment of BBQ sauces keeps flavor and variety. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. I have eaten here 10 times without disappointment. If you love BBQ (Memphis or Carolina style), you must try Smoke!

In an area inundated with "authentic" barbecue restaurants, Smoke has established a popular niche in the Newport News area. The atmosphere is friendly and family-oriented, with rows of booths and tables and babies and noise. This is not a romantic dinner to be sure, but a food coma awaits. I had the Smokemaster sandwich, with enough brisket and pulled pork for four sandwiches. Burgers, tuna steaks, fried pickles, you get the idea. Had we been on our way home, doggie bags would have been the order. Sauces on the table complimented the meats and appetizers well, my favorite being the mustard sauce, which I'm sure would have been good on the desserts. My only complaint was with the pork, it seemed a bit overly salty to me, not allowing the full flavor of the meat to shine. Despite this, we were totally impressed with Smoke, and are sure to make it a staple of our trips east from Richmond. Pass the sauce please.

The family and I visited Smoke for the first time this afternoon. I had the brisket and rope sausage ... the wife had the pulled pork. The portions were huge and everything was delicious, but I really have to say something about the sausage. The rope sausage is the best I have ever eaten, and is enough alone to keep me coming back for more. It was moist and really delicious. The manager visited the table and welcomed us ... later a huge plate of banana pudding showed up from him ... thanks. Both he and the waitperson were very friendly, helpful, and efficient. We'll definitely be going back.

The service was great here. The reason why it gets two stars is the mediocre taste of the food. It was all pretty bland and regular. The pop corn was prefect for the kids to keep them entertained. We started off with an appetizer of onion rings. The dipping sauce was amazing but only got about 8 rings for $5.00. The onion rings themselves where something you could go to the store and buy frozen and cook up at home. I got the pulled pork dinner with mac & cheese and green beans. Husband got the pick 2 platter (half chicken and ribs) with baked beans and coleslaw. My pulled pork was about half fat and half meat. The sides we decent. Just nothing that special. Husband said the baked beans we could have gone to store and bought canned beans. The portions where good, decor was nice and service great. Just thought for the price we should have had some wow factor to our food.

This past weekend, we decided to try Smoke, as there's been a buzz about this new Barbecue restaurant recently. The place was packed, with a 45-minute wait. Numerous diners that were leaving mentioned that it was well worth the wait. Finally, we were seated. The waitress took our drink order quickly, but the drinks took forever to arrive. The kettle corn - we had to ask for, but eventually they started bringing it. It was necessary because it was late, and the food, like the drinks, took forever to come out. The food itself was great - Fries and coleslaw tasted great, and the pulled chicken and brisket was fantastic. As the place started to slow down, things went smoother, which tells me that much of the service issue that we (and others) had is a result of their just opening up. Hopefully they clear some of those kinks out, as the food's a bit pricey, so you expect great service, and it's just not there. 11/13/12 Update We gave Smoke another try, and upped my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars - VERY much improved. Fried pickles and Smokemaster BBQ - fantastic, and we were stuffed when we left there, even skipping dessert!!

So full right now :) just finished a takeout order. This was the 1st time eating here and I will be back. I recently moved from ohio and they have a great bbq restaurant there called city bbq, since moving i have been wanting some good bbq so decided to try Smoke. I had pulled pork, green beans, & mac and cheese; my bf had brisket & mashed potatoes. The pork was great & the Green beans were awesome! The beans were not frozen or canned- they were garden beans, such an excellent surprise. Mac & cheese is pretty hard to screw up so if course that was fine. Our only complaint was that the brisket came with sauce already on it which we didn't care for ( I like to add my own sauce to the smoked brisket) , I'm not sure if you can get the brisket plain or not, but I'm sure it would be fantastic if they are able to do this. And make sure to get a banana pudding- delicious ! I can't give them 5 stars because while it was very good--it was not up to par with city bbq. I'm sure if you have never had city bbq though you would have no reason to rate any less than five :)

Smoke BBQ catered an event I had for about 75 attendees. They event included food, staff and delivery. If I were able to post all of the comments from my event in regards to how much everyone liked the food it would fill the page. We had the basics pulled pork and brisket (both served buffet style with slider buns), bacon wrapped jalapenos stuff with Brisket/shrimp (this was the big hit), potato salad and coleslaw and wings. I had the wings served on the buffet plain with different types of sauce. They also gave us more than enough of the blue cheese which was delicious. Great experience, there are alot of things they do outside of their normal restaurant menu, so ask them for other options for catering. Thanks Smoke BBQ!

We saw a picture on Facebook of some really great looking cheese fries that prompted us to give smoke another try after 2 less than good visits. The cheese fries we were served were about as far from the picture as possible. The rest of the food was just as disapointing. I ordered the pick 3 platter, the ribs were very dry, over cooked, and clealy not fresh.the brisket was also very very dry and crumbled apart to the point of having to scoop it up to eat. The half chicken was the best part of the meal and was very tasty. My wife ordered a simple cheeseburger that was also very dry and had no flavor served with inedible fries. During our visit we listened to one server warning a table what not to order and another server coplaining about how bad business had "fallen off" which would explain the dry meats that was clearly not fresh. In all this place has dropped the ball from the great first visit we had. BBQ just does not reheat well after a few days of sitting around.

Prepare yourself for a food coma...this place is great and I would say they serve too much food but I have no experience pricing food. I have had the SmokeMaster sandwich (brisket & pulled pork) 3 or 4 times and I have never been able to finish it. The brisket is the best I have ever had. Caution: it is served without sauce (how I prefer it) and has a side of fat still on it. I can't convince myself to leave the fat on, but I respect how much that pearl contributes to the juiciness of the loveliness...of this slice of heaven. I know it makes no sense...but little does after you bite into the sandwich. I have also tried the brisket sandwich (sans pork) and it doesn't quite stack up to the SmokeMaster...so it is safe to conclude that the pork plays a part. My wife, a part-time vegetarian from MN, limits our trips to the restaurant but every time we go she gets the chicken (I said part-time) with greens and slaw. Watching a Minnesotan experience greens for the first time is something, but she loves them. word of caution...Bacon Brisket Cheddar Burger is NOT cheese on bacon on brisket...it is: cheese on bacon on brisket on a 1/2 lb burger... ...seriously...who thought a two-meat sandwich was one meat too few? You must try the SmokeMaster (but eat it with a fork), the coleslaw...and the greens...oh and the baked beans have chunks of pulled pork in them... FREAKING RIDICULOUS!!!

My brother in law had heard from a friend about this place and decided that he wanted to go for his birthday. We made a reservation (which I recommend because they are really busy, they will take reservations for 6 or more people) and were seated after 5 minutes. We got the Frickles, which we really good. I got the Kansas City ribs and they were delicious. Being pregnant I can only eat so much food and I ended up taking half of my half rack home. Even warmed in the microwave two days later they were still good. The side salad was good as well (though I got it without the parm and feta cheese) and I only took a bite of the baked beans but they tasted good as well. The service was great, we never ran out of drinks and were well takien care of. The reason I am giving it a 4 is that from the time we got salads to the time we got our food was a bit of a wait, especially for kids (which we had 3 of). Definitely will have to return.

I had the smoked pork sandwich and my son had the hot dog (wrapped in bacon and topped with pulled pork). They were both terrific. Great smoked flavor without sauce. The 4 sauce choices were good and not over-powering, though a spicier option would have been nice. One note: I had the Texas Caviar as a side- it was excellent! We highly recommend this place. This is why I don't like chain restaurants - you miss all the great surprises.

Ah, smoke. When it's billowing from a house, it's dangerous. When it's coming from the engine of your car, it's a harbinger of doom. When it's the taste that adorns a whiskey, it's soothing. When it's the name of a restaurant, get your taste buds ready. This place opened with a lot of fanfare when it opened, and then I didn't hear much about it for a while. So, when I got the opportunity to check the place out myself, I was excited to see about the fuss. Firstly, I could smell the barbecuing deliciousnessissity before I walked in. Here's the problem: I wasn't hungry. I thought I would sidle up to the bar, get some watery beer and have some half-hearted appetizer. WRONG! At the bar, I met an incredibly cool bartender who guided me into an appetizer that was potato skins with brisket on it. Yep! Beer choices? How about some of my favorite microbrews from up and down the East Coast? Yep! With each subsequent visit, the offerings continue to blow me away. Homemade pork rinds...aww yeah! Smoked fish and homemade potato chips...aww yeah! A hot dog wrapped in brisket and everything else that could could kill the arteries of any super-sized man...I'm not ready...yet. Stop in for lunch, have a great dinner, talk to my girl Lexi about their beer selections, I swear you will enjoy yourself.

Went to Smoke not really expecting anything really special...They were fairly busy for a late lunch crowd. We were seated right away, the server took our drink order. Looking over the menu we found the prices to be very reasonable and they had a great selection of BBQ items to choose from. Our server recommended the Baby Back Ribs, so we ordered a full rack with two sides and shared. The ribs were surprisingly tender, and were smoked perfect. They did not fall off the bone, but they were not tough either, cooked just right in our opinion. I had the Mac & Cheese for my side and Jean choose the BBQ Baked Beans for her side. The Mac & Cheese was really rich and loaded with good quality cheddar. Jean's BBQ Baked Beans were very good with lots of smoke flavoring. We really had an enjoyable meal and plan to visit Smoke again when were in the area.

As always the food is very good, however since the redesign of the restaurant the service has been abysmal. The kitchen time has become ridiculous and orders are coming out all mixed up, or just cold. Very disappointing.

As a native Texan, YUCK!! WHY, OH WHY would you ruin what may have actually been a good brisket by drowning it in some sickeningly sweet goop you pass off as bbq sauce? The red sauce is ok, but that's not what you drowned this poor brisket in. The sausage was over cooked outside and still too greasy inside. Pulled pork ok but bland. Potato salad halfway decent. Coleslaw had no flavor and same for green beans. Service was also not good - waitress started off good, friendly, but then after she took our order & dropped the food off she never came back. Had to wait like 30 minutes for a box (just to take the leftovers home to trash probably). Also, if you offer a plate with either SLICED or PULLED brisket, and a customer just says "brisket" - NEVER ASSUME -ALWAYS ASK WHICH THEY WANT!!!! they brought me pulled. It was disgusting, swimming in that crap goop "sauce". Sliced may have been delicious but I'll never know, I won't be back.

Went to Smoke last night with some friends and woke up today thinking I really need to review this place. It was excellent! Wife and I both got the 3 meat tray for 16$ and it was everything I hoped for. There are several sauces on the table but if you want "HOT" you need to ask your server. There is Sweet baby Jesus from Duclaw Brewery on tap along with several other local brews. For desert the chocolate covered bacon thing was the better of the two deserts we had. The deep fried kool-aid was interesting but not my favorite. The atmosphere was casual so my sometimes loud baby was not an issue for anyone Overall this place was excellent and I will definitely be back!

Can't say enough good things about this BBQ! So good and worth every penny. Ordering the 3 meats for $20 means you have more than one meal. Also, they have Sweet Baby Jesus on tap! Don't come here for a NY strip: it's not on the menu and it's not missed.

My wife, friends, and I dined here tonight, our first time. We ordered the "Frickles" fried pickles for our appetizer. They were very good. The bistro sauce was a bit spicy for our taste so we asked for some ranch dressing which made them much better. I had the Pick Two Platter (16.99) which came with two sides. I had the pulled pork and beef brisket with green beans and baked beans on the side. My wife had the pulled chicken and the other adult at the table had ribs. Our friend was disappointed with the ribs, however she expected them to taste like "Outback." I tried the ribs and said, "well that's the smoked flavor in them. Outback probably doesn't smoke theirs." I found the sample she gave me very tasty. My wife liked the pulled chicken. I enjoyed all of mine which also included a cornbread muffin. Serving sizes were very good, the service (Kristle) was fantastic, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The Hostess made us feel very welcome and our server was proactive and frequently checked on us. The kettle corn was a surprise, which kept the kids happy. I actually felt like this was better than the Williamsburg "Red, Hot, and Blue" which serves "Memphis" style BBQ. I will be back!

My husband and I had lunch here today after a couple people told us how good it was. My husband is a huge rib fan, so we were very excited to try a new place. I was pleasantly surprised with the inside of the place. Very nicely decorated and great atmosphere. We really enjoyed the kettle corn while we waited - such a nice touch! The place was packed for Valentine's Day lunch. There was a group of 30 in the back room and a large group of about 20 older ladies. Jaime was our server and she was amazing. We ordered onion rings as an appetizer and they were quickly brought out. The sauce with the onion rings is delicious! Our food came out not long after. My husband got the 2 meat platter with baby back ribs and pulled pork. He said the ribs were very good and the pulled pork was outstanding. I tried some of his pulled pork and it almost melted in my mouth! There were four different barbeque sauces on the table and all were unique and not like sauces we've had anywhere else. My husband's sides were fries and mac and cheese. He didn't care for the mac and cheese so much, but I thought it was pretty good. The fries were seasoned nicely. I got a chicken quesadilla which was good. Why I ordered chicken at a barbeque place, I don't know. Next time I want to try the pork nachos! Try this place - you won't be sorry!

i hate to come straight out the gate with 5 stars but i have been waiting for a good barbecue place. start out with the smell it told me right away they weren't pretending here the were really smokin. i am usually a stickler for service i have to say the lady who seated us dropped the ball she might as well have grunted at me but i was busy taking in the scenery and the smell and frankly after the food i could care less. It was nicer inside than i had expected table was comfortable and the atmosphere was pleasant. the waiter was prompt and friendly he explained the specials and made recommendations when asked. although i must confess i did not follow them, having heard stories of a legendary burger half of our order was already decided...the bacon cheddar brisket burger. i tried a pick 2 so we could check out other offerings pork and half chicken. the service was prompt we didnt wait long at all maybe 10 minutes but ididnt really take note because it was so fast. the burger first off was cooked just as it was ordered, medium. not well done when he ordered medium, first good sign. second the brisket, great smoke ring, juicy and tender but not overcooked. he made me jealous as i wish i had ordered the brisket after that, 3rd check was bacon was not limp or under-represented. properly cooked and plenty of it this is a big burger folks be prepared. on to the platter, the chicken was good i would say my least favorite though if you could order just the dark meat i would the breast was just a lil dry but not terrible dry not offensive in any way, but next to the pork and the brisket it had a lot to live up to and its just a leaner meat thats all. the pork well seasoned and great smoke on it and the portion was huge. 4 sauces at the table btw, my favorite was the red one lil sweet lil spice but most definetely not spicy, the sweet one was good and the tangy as well. tangy had vinegar and i can only guess some worcesteshire which i love but overall didnt really stand out. there was a gold i didnt try it as honestly the meat had plenty of flavor on its own so i merely sampled the sauces. now to the one bad thing i can say and that is dill. i dunno about yall but i dont put dill in mashed potatoes, especially with my bbq i wasnt a fan...imma fat kid i looooove mashed potatoes i found this to be a bit of a crime but if yall dig it then im just wrong. the only other concern i have and after reading some of the other reviews is we went at 1115 just after they opened. i cant speak for later in the day, but our food tasted like it just got out of the smoker and our service was prompt attentive and friendly (with exception to the greeter). if you havent tried it then try it, if you have and kinda iffy about it at dinner try again for a leisurely lunch. way better than the other local hot spot for bbq, when i go back (and i will) i will bet ordering brisket
